Slovakia financially supported the establishment of a camp in Syria, so people affected by the earthquake will find shelter, food and treatment

Slovakia continues to provide aid to people in areas hit by a series of devastating earthquakes in early February. On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the non-governmental organization Development for Life and Peace Association, a partner organization of the Slovak Agency for International Development Cooperation, sent a financial contribution of 37,000 euros to help people in Syria.

"In Syria, the earthquake affected more than nine million people. The situation in the north-west of the country is still critical almost a month after the disaster, and the humanitarian needs of those affected are massive," explained the Slovak Ambassador to Lebanon Marek Varga.

The contribution will ensure the establishment of a temporary camp with a field hospital, a kitchen and a tent, in which the displaced will be provided with shelter, food and medical treatment for one month. "Building a camp in the vicinity of Aleppo, where people will receive comprehensive assistance, is a confirmation that Slovakia's assistance is fast, concrete and targeted," said Ingrid Brocková, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

The financial aid for building the camp is not the only manifestation of solidarity that Slovakia has shown. Immediately after the earthquake, the WHO Emergency Fund provided EUR 100,000 to help Turkey and Syria, as well as a contribution of EUR 60,000 to UNICEF to support the mitigation of the consequences of the earthquake in Syria, especially for abandoned children who lost their parents.

The Department of Diplomacy continues to cooperate with the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic and other central state administration bodies, as well as with the non-governmental and private sector, and is preparing a large-scale shipment of material humanitarian aid that will be transported from Slovakia to Syria in the coming days.
