Tree Planting Creates New Opportunities for Farmers in Kenya

A SlovakAid-supported project is helping smallholder farmers in Kenya develop sustainable agriculture through the cultivation of avocado and macadamia trees. In addition to strengthening resilience to climate change, the project creates new opportunities to increase household incomes and improve the long-term economic resilience of local communities.

The project “Avocado and Macadamia Trees – A Path Towards Environmental and Socio-economic Sustainability in Kenya” is implemented by SAVIO in partnership with the Don Bosco Development Outreach Network (DBDON), building on more than 18 years of cooperation in implementing development initiatives in Kenya. The project is supported by SlovakAid with a grant of EUR 250,000. This long-standing partnership combines Slovak expertise with the partner's in-depth knowledge of the local context and the needs of local communities.

During the first phase, 1,421 farmers from the regions of Makuyu, Meru and Kitale were registered to participate in the planned activities. Among them were 732 women, 293 young people, and 12 persons with disabilities, reflecting the project's commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities.

An important component of the project is strengthening farmers' knowledge and practical skills. During the initial months, the farmers completed training on the cultivation of avocado and macadamia trees, gaining practical knowledge on soil preparation, proper planting techniques, tree care, soil conservation, and sustainable water management. The training also included practical field demonstrations to help farmers apply the newly acquired knowledge in their daily agricultural practices.

The training was followed by the distribution of the first avocado and macadamia seedlings. The project procured more than 40,000 seedlings, with nearly 13,000 seedlings distributed to farmers during the first reporting period. The strong demand for avocado seedlings demonstrates the growing importance of this crop as a promising source of future income for rural households.

After receiving the seedlings, farmers began planting them on their prepared plots following the guidance provided by agricultural experts. During the next phase of the project, participating farmers will be regularly monitored to ensure proper tree management and maximise the survival and growth of the young trees.

The project also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals. Tree planting supports climate change adaptation by improving soil quality, reducing erosion, and strengthening the resilience of farming communities. At the same time, it creates new economic opportunities for women, young people, and other vulnerable groups by improving their access to knowledge, agricultural inputs, and future income opportunities.

By promoting sustainable agriculture, sharing expertise, and working closely with local partners, the project contributes to building more resilient rural communities and supports long-term environmental and socio-economic development in Kenya.
