The Slovak Republic, through SlovakAid, has provided additional material assistance to the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the country's preparedness for environmental emergencies. As part of this support, the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova received 1,300 litres of biodegradable sorbent designed for the removal of oil pollutants from the water surface.
The assistance follows the pollution of the Dniester River in March 2026, which occurred after damage to the Novodnestrovsk hydropower plant during the war in Ukraine. The oil spill posed risks to aquatic ecosystems as well as to the drinking water supply for communities located along the river in Moldova.
Following a request from the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova, the Slovak Agency for International Development Cooperation (SAIDC) arranged the delivery of the sorbent through a public procurement process.
The supplied sorbent will replenish Moldova's emergency reserves and enhance the country's capacity to respond more effectively to future environmental incidents.
The assistance will also contribute to the protection of water resources and strengthen Moldova's preparedness to address similar environmental emergencies in the future.
