Support for Reconstruction of Protective Shelters in Schools in Ukraine<\/strong><\/h2>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Slovak Republic has provided a financial contribution of EUR 300,000 to the non-profit organization \u201cAngels of Freedom<\/strong><\/a>\u201d for the modernization and reconstruction of protective shelters<\/strong> in selected educational facilities in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions of Ukraine. The aim of the support is to enhance the safety of children and teaching staff<\/strong> in regions that have been long exposed to security risks as a result of the ongoing war.<\/div><\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Strengthening Civil Protection for Children<\/strong><\/p>

Functional and technically compliant shelters represent an essential element of civil protection.<\/strong> In conditions of heightened security risk, they enable a rapid response in the event of an air raid alert while also creating conditions for the continuation of education during emergency situations.<\/p>

Although underground premises are available in many schools and pre-school facilities, their technical condition often does not meet the requirements for safe and long-term use. Structural adjustments, technical safeguards, adequate sanitary conditions, and basic equipment necessary for emergency situations are frequently lacking.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

The aim<\/strong> of the project is to modernize these spaces so that they meet safety standards while also ensuring the continuity of education.<\/strong><\/div><\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Locations of Implementation<\/strong><\/p>

The support is being implemented in close cooperation between the Angels of Freedom<\/em> organization and the local municipalities in<\/div>
  • Chernihiv region<\/strong> \u2013 two pre-school facilities<\/li>
  • Sumy region<\/strong> \u2013 four educational institutions<\/li><\/ul>

    Implementation of the project began in January 2026. The first month focused on preparatory activities: technical assessments of the condition of existing shelters, preparation of documentation for reconstruction works, coordination with local partners, and the establishment of an implementation framework that included a transparent and cost\u2011effective procurement process.<\/p>

    These thorough preparations were followed by a smooth start to construction activities, with the first reconstruction works beginning directly in the selected shelters already in February, in line with the project schedule.<\/p>

    In the Chernihiv region, the process of selecting a construction contractor has already been completed, while in the Sumy region, the Angels of Freedom<\/em> team has finalized technical inspections and identified the specific technical requirements of all participating facilities.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Expected Impact<\/strong><\/p>

    Upon completion of the reconstruction works, the underground premises will comply with the technical and safety requirements.<\/p>

    The project will contribute to:<\/strong><\/p>

    • enhancing the physical safety<\/strong> of children and teaching staff,<\/li>
    • strengthening the resilience<\/strong> of local communities,<\/li>
    • ensuring continuity of the educational process,<\/strong><\/li>
    • supporting the functioning of essential public services<\/strong> in regions exposed to security risks.<\/li><\/ul>
      The project is being implemented with regular monthly reporting by the beneficiary.       Support for Energy Infrastructure and Winter Preparedness<\/strong><\/h2>


      Support for energy infrastructure<\/strong> forms an important part of SlovakAid<\/em> assistance, as the sector continues to face long-term disruptions and damage. Despite gradual restoration of capacities, the energy situation remains sensitive ahead of the winter period and requires further measures to ensure stable electricity supply and the functioning of essential services.<\/strong><\/p>

The support was implemented on the basis of a signed agreement, and the equipment has been delivered and put into use.<\/p>
